Spread the Love: Valentine's Day for Kids in the Hospital

Wednesday, February 13, 2019

This post is one I've been so excited to share and it isn't even anything like my typical posts! Something that has been newly trending these past few years has been sending kids in the hospital Valentine's Day Cards- or really any type of well wishes around the holidays. I've always loved this idea and participated in it since a little act can go such a long way. Today I have rounded up a list of a few of the Children's Hospitals that distribute Valentine's to those in the hospital. The University of Michigan's very own CS Mott is on the list as well.

Without further a due, Valentine's for the Kiddos:

Cincinnati Children's: This one is so cute and has little activity pages for the kids receiving them to do during their stay!
CS Mott: This one is fun since you can also download the app and send them to your own family members! They've actually stopped doing the valentines due to the outpouring love from the community this year!
Boston Children's: BCH allows for you to put your own custom message on the back for the kid! Something so little that can be so sweet!
St. Jude: I absolutely love how they featured some of the kids original artwork as cards to choose from! I had so much fun sending in a card on their site!
CHLA: Party city is donating $1 to CHLA for every card they receive! Help even more dreams come true by sending in a valentine!
ACH: The Arkansas Children's hospital is also donating $1 for every card received!

There are so many more hospitals doing this as well all it takes is a quick google search to find others!  Spread the love this year and send in a Valentine! It takes two seconds of your time to brighten someone else day!

Cakes Over Dates & Conscious Self Love

This past weekend I attended a wonderful event put on by Planthropie. For those unfamiliar with the company, Planthropie is a all natural, raw, plant based food pop-up company. While I'm not plant based, it was a really eye opening experience since the main foods keeping me from being plant based are desserts and cheeses- which was what Planthropie featured at this event!

I was beyond pleasantly surprised at the food! The cakes were phenomenal! They were so sweet and fulfilling, something I wasn't expecting out of a product that didn't have sugar or dairy. The cheese, however took me by surprise the most! Cheese is obviously dairy, so having a cheese that wasn't made from dairy had me a little apprehensive about what it would taste like, but after a bite I was hooked to say the least! One of the types of cheese had chives which I typically don't enjoy, but that ended up being my favorite cheese! I also really liked putting my cheeses on strawberries, something I would've never done prior! All in all, the food blew me away and I now understand how so many people can go plant based and still enjoy the food they are eating!
There were also guest speakers at the event to talk about self love, what it means to them and how to implement it in your own life as well. These talks were so motivational and inspiring! It was nice to know that some of the things I feel everyday are legitimate and others have felt that way in the past. It was nice to hear that they have over time those obstacles and anyone can overcome those feelings as well! It was also nice to hear other ideas of how to implement self care and self love besides what people typically think of. In a way, this blog is my form of self care since I'm journaling my life experiences on things that I love to do!

Thank you to Rua, the founder of Planthropie for such a wonderful event!

The Girl Behind The Brand

Monday, February 4, 2019

The Detroit Socialite has been up and running (minus a few hiccups I'm still trying to work out) for just about a month now and I've realized, I haven't formally introduced myself. My name is Marisa and I'm the Girl Behind the Brand.
Sometimes, alleys in Eastern Market lead to perfect photo opportunities.
Sweater: Guess / Bag: Burberry / Jeans: Gap
The Detroit Socialite is my escape. The Detroit Socialite makes me more daring toward new things. It pushes me to put myself out there and explore all of the hidden gems this big, beautiful city has to offer. The Detroit Socialite brings out my playful personality in a way that often doesn't get utilized. The Detroit Socialite brings out my inner love of fashion and food, that typically isn't shown to the world. Basically, the Detroit Socialite is my alter ego. Who I wish I could showcase every day, but often gets buried away until I get back into this city.
And sometimes standing on stoops lead to mural walls  and getting your car stuck in the snow.
Real life Marisa has a normal job working with kids, preparing to get her masters to continue working in this field, following her passion. The real me is playful and goofy- I'd like to say it's just for the kids, but in all actuality its almost all the time. The real me is a go getter. I graduated college this past summer in three years to head back home to Detroit a year early, a decision I'll never regret and showcases my determination and diligence to accomplish any goal that I set for myself. The real me is a huge animal person, specifically dogs, but cats are growing on me. The real me is compassionate and loves to give back to the community. Working with a local organization when I was in high school to help feed those in need around the city helped me fall in love with everything this city has to offer.
And then you get pictures like this- your genuine self.
Sometimes I feel like the real me and The Detroit Socialite are two different versions of myself, but the more I look, the more I realize its just me, Marisa.

Stay weird, Detroit.

House Of Vans Detroit

Monday, January 28, 2019

House of Vans this past weekend, Vans took over Jefferson School and had a weekend full of live music, art, skate boarding, an indoor street market and workshops. This was a really cool way to see the community come together under one roof and gave me an opportunity to look at some local vendors I haven't had a chance to check out yet!

It was also really cool to see people skateboarding around in the gym. I've always been too afraid to get on a skateboard myself, but some of these kids out there skateboarding made it look so effortless and easy (even though I know it isn't)! It was also so sweet watching some of the older skaters help out the younger skaters, really showcasing the community aspect I mentioned previously.

If this event is coming to a city near you, I highly encourage you to check it out! It showcases the community with all the local artists and vendors within the city, but also has artwork from the company. Here's the link to the House of Vans website to see if it'll be in your city next!

About the Detroit Socialite

Friday, January 11, 2019

I remember growing up and being so infatuated with this city, getting goose bumps whenever I could see the Ren Cen skyline pulling into view. I remember going to Eastern Market when I was six years old. I remember going to Belle Isle to feed deer during the winter months when I was young. I remember seeing the rugged state Detroit was in, and yet still finding beauty in this city. Since then, Detroit has been turning heads as it rebuilds itself into its new found glory and I'm beyond ecstatic to see where this rebuild and new growth takes the city.

As a native returned home after 3 years of being away, I'm in complete awe at everything this city has to offer. Every time I head downtown (more frequent than I care to admit) there's a new place to explore as well as many hidden gems to revisit each visit. Watching this city rebuild itself over my lifetime has been such a cool experience, an experience I hope to share with all of you.

The Detroit Socialite plans to encompass the style and spirit of Detroit. From eats, to fashion, to city life, The Detroit Socialite plans to showcase the best of Detroit, as well as offer insight on what this city has to offer each person it inhabits.
